Every chess term explained simply, with diagrams: rules, tactics, famous checkmates and strategic concepts.
A
- Algebraic notation Fundamentals Algebraic notation records every chess move with the piece and its destination square (e4, Nf3, Qxf7+). How to read and write it correctly.
- Anastasia's mate Famous checkmates Anastasia's mate: a knight locks down the escape squares of a king trapped on the edge, while a rook or queen delivers mate along the file. Pattern and example.

- Back-rank mate Famous checkmates A back-rank mate strikes on the first or last rank when the king, boxed in by its own pawns, has no square to run from a rook or queen. Mechanism and defense.
- Backward pawn Pawns A backward pawn has fallen behind its neighbors, can no longer be defended by a pawn, and stays pinned on a weak square. How to exploit or fix it.
- Bad bishop Strategy A bad bishop is a bishop blocked by its own pawns, fixed on squares of its color. How to spot one, trade it off, or bring it back to life.
- Battery Tactics A battery lines up two pieces on the same line to strike twice in a row: the second piece punishes whoever recaptures the first. Example.
- Bishop pair Strategy The bishop pair is the advantage of keeping both your bishops when your opponent has only one or none: a lasting edge, above all in open positions.
- Blitz Culture and time controls Blitz is a fast chess time control: 10 minutes or less per player, usually 3+0, 3+2 or 5+0. Time controls, increment, and how blitz affects progress.
- Boden's mate Famous checkmates Boden's mate is a checkmate where two criss-crossing bishops trap a queenside-castled king blocked by its own pieces. Pattern, example and defense.
- Bullet Culture and time controls Bullet is the fastest chess time control: 1 to 3 minutes per player, usually 1+0 or 2+1. Premoves, flagging, and whether bullet helps you improve.

- Castling Fundamentals Castling is the only chess move that moves two pieces at once: the king gets to safety while the rook joins the game. Rules, conditions and examples.
- Center Strategy The center covers squares d4, e4, d5 and e5: controlling them gives more space and mobility, one of the first goals of any opening.
- Check Fundamentals A check is a direct attack on the king. Three ways to respond: move the king, block the attack, or capture the piece. Rules and examples.
- Checkmate Fundamentals Checkmate ends the game instantly: the king is attacked and can't flee, block, or capture. Definition and a worked back-rank mate example.
- Combination Tactics A combination is a forced sequence of tactical moves leading to a concrete result: material, mate, or a decisive advantage. Definition, example.

- Decoy Tactics A decoy lures an enemy piece, often the king, onto a specific square where it becomes vulnerable to another piece. Example and mechanism.
- Deflection Tactics Deflection forces an enemy piece away from the square or duty it's defending, clearing the way for a combination. Definition and example.
- Development Strategy Development means bringing your pieces into active play as fast as possible early on, gaining valuable time and activity on your opponent.
- Discovered attack Tactics A discovered attack happens when a piece moves away and unmasks the attack of another piece hiding behind it. How it works, animated example.
- Double attack Tactics A double attack threatens two enemy pieces with a single move: the opponent can only save one of them. Definition, example, and link to the fork.
- Double check Tactics A double check happens when a moving piece checks the king itself while also unmasking a check from another piece. The king must always move.
- Doubled pawns Pawns Doubled pawns are two pawns of the same color stacked on one file after a capture. Weaknesses, compensation, and how to exploit or live with them.
- Draw Fundamentals A draw ends the game with no winner: each player scores half a point. Stalemate, agreement, threefold repetition, the 50-move rule, insufficient material.

- En passant Fundamentals En passant is a special pawn capture: a pawn that advances two squares can be captured as if it had moved only one. Rule, timing, notation and examples.

- Fianchetto Strategy A fianchetto develops a bishop to g2, g7, b2 or b7 after a pawn push, putting it on a long, open diagonal early in the chess game.
- Fifty-move rule Fundamentals The fifty-move rule lets a player claim a draw if no capture or pawn move has occurred in the last fifty moves played by either side.
- Fool's mate Famous checkmates Fool's Mate is the fastest possible checkmate in chess: two moves, if White opens the diagonal to their own king. Definition and classic example.
- Fork Tactics A fork is a tactic where one piece attacks two enemy pieces at the same time. The knight is its greatest specialist. Examples, diagrams and defenses.
- Fortress Endgames A fortress is an unbreakable endgame setup that guarantees a draw despite being down material, like the wrong-colored bishop versus a rook pawn.

- Gambit Culture and time controls A gambit deliberately sacrifices a pawn early in the opening for development or initiative. The Queen's Gambit example, and accepting vs declining.
- Grandmaster Culture and time controls Grandmaster (GM) is the highest FIDE title, earned for life with a 2500 rating and three norms. Requirements and the other FIDE titles.

- Initiative Strategy Having the initiative means forcing your opponent to react to your moves instead of following their own plan. Where it comes from and how to keep it.
- Isolated pawn Pawns An isolated pawn has no friendly pawn left on the neighboring files. A long-term weakness but a dynamic asset: the isolated queen's pawn (IQP).

- Ladder mate Famous checkmates Ladder mate pushes the enemy king to the edge with two rooks that take turns, rank after rank, like climbing rungs. Technique, example and why it's called that.

- Open file Strategy An open file has no pawns left, for either side: a rook or queen placed on it controls the entire file, from end to end, unopposed.
- Opposition Endgames Opposition is a face-off between kings separated by an odd number of squares on the same line: whoever must move gives ground. Definition and example.
- Outpost Strategy An outpost is a square, usually deep in enemy territory, where a piece settles beyond the reach of any enemy pawn attack for good.
- Overloading Tactics Overloading happens when a piece must defend two things at once: attack one and the other falls. Definition, example and how to avoid it.

- Passed pawn Pawns A passed pawn has no enemy pawn left on its own file or the two files next to it, making it a genuine promotion threat as the endgame nears.
- Pawn chain Pawns A pawn chain is a diagonal line of pawns where each one defends the next. Base, head, and how to attack it: the classic French Defense example.
- Pawn majority Pawns A pawn majority means more pawns than your opponent on one wing. It promises a passed pawn in the endgame, if you know how to push it.
- Pawn promotion Fundamentals Pawn promotion turns a pawn that reaches the last rank into a queen, rook, bishop, or knight. Rule, underpromotion, and a worked example.
- Pawn structure Pawns Pawn structure is the skeleton formed by every pawn in a game. It shapes each side's plans, strong squares, open files, and weaknesses.
- Philidor position Endgames The Philidor position is the standard rook-endgame defense: the rook holds the third rank to draw against an advancing pawn. Method and example.
- Piece values Fundamentals Piece values give each piece a point score to judge a trade: pawn 1, knight and bishop 3, rook 5, queen 9, for a quick material guide.
- Pin Tactics A pin immobilizes an enemy piece lined up with a more valuable piece behind it, which can't be exposed. Absolute vs relative pins, examples.
- Poisoned pawn Pawns A poisoned pawn looks free to grab but hides a tactical or positional trap. The classic example: the Poisoned Pawn Variation of the Najdorf.
- Prophylaxis Strategy Prophylaxis means preventing your opponent's plan before it exists, rather than reacting to it. Where the concept comes from and how to use it.

- Removing the defender Tactics Removing the defender means capturing or deflecting the piece guarding a target so you can win it for free right after. Method and example.
- Rule of the square Endgames The rule of the square shows instantly whether a king can catch a passed pawn: draw a square from the pawn to its promotion square. Method and example.

- Sacrifice Tactics A sacrifice means willingly giving up material for a non-material advantage: attack, initiative, or position. Classic example and the reasoning.

- Tempo Fundamentals A tempo is a move gained or lost relative to your opponent: developing fast without wasting one is a key opening principle in chess.
- Threefold repetition Fundamentals Threefold repetition lets either player claim a draw when the same position occurs three times, with the same side to move and rights.
- Touch-move rule Fundamentals Touch-move is the rule requiring you to move or capture the first piece you touch, as long as it has a legal move available.

- Weak square Strategy A weak square, or hole, is a square no pawn can ever defend again: a permanent gap in the pawn structure your opponent can exploit.
- Windmill Tactics A windmill alternates direct and discovered checks to gobble up enemy pieces one after another without letting the defender breathe. Example.

- Zugzwang Endgames Zugzwang is a position where having to move disadvantages the player to move: every legal move worsens his position. Definition, example, technique.
- Zwischenzug Tactics A zwischenzug is a strong, often forced move inserted into a sequence of exchanges to win a tempo or material before recapturing. Example.
